Anti-Depressant Medicine
There are many different types of antidepressant medicines that can be used to treat depression. Each of these types of medicine work a little differently. Your symptoms, medical history, and family history often give clues about the best medicine for you. Still, it may take some time to find the one that works best for you and has the least side effects. Together, you and your health care provider will find the exact type and amount of medicine that you need.
The newest antidepressants include the Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) and Reversible Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (RIMAs). They are commonly prescribed presently for Major Depression because they are safe and have fewer side effects than the older antidepressants, which include the Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs) and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).
SSRI stands for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors
SSRIs are antidepressants which are used to help to improve mood in people who are feeling low or depressed. Fluoxetine ("Prozac") may also be used to help treat the eating disorder "Bulimia nervosa". In addition to this, the SSRIs are now widely used to help a variety of other symptoms. These include anxiety (where a lower starting dose often helps), social phobia and social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic, pre-menstrual syndrome and agoraphobia. Some drugs are "licensed" (ie officially approved) for some of these conditions (e.g. paroxetine for social phobia) but this does not necessarily mean the others do not help, just one manufacturer can prove it and has applied for a licence.
How do the SSRI's work ?
The brains has many naturally occurring chemical messengers. One of these are called serotonin (sometimes called 5-HT) and is important in the areas of the brain that control mood and thinking. It is known that this serotonin is not as effective or active as normal in the brain when someone is feeling depressed. The SSRI antidepressants increase the amount of this serotonin chemical messenger in the brain. This can help correct the lack of action of serotonin and help to improve mood.

Aropax also known as Paxil
Aropax (paroxetine) is marketed under the brand name Paxil in the United Sates. Aropax (Paxil) belongs to the group of antidepressants known as SSRIs (Selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors) and as the name suggests, works by moderating the amount of seratonin present in the brain.
Prozac
Prozac is used to treat depression and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
Zoloft
As well as depression, Zoloft is also prescribed to treat panic and anxiety disorders, and OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder).
Celexa
Celexa (citalopram) is a new, highly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that was approved by the FDA for the treatment of depression in July of 1998. More than five million consumers have already been prescribed Celexa, which is currently available in 49 other countries.
Lexapro
On August 15, 2002, it was announced by Forest Laboratories, Inc. that their new antidepressant Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) had received FDA approval. Lexapro, the single-isomer of Celexa, is reported to be well-tolerated and may offer some distinct advantages over the drug it is derived from.
Lexapro is reported to have a few advantages over its predecessor, Celexa.
The first is its potency. The recommended dose is 10 mg per day. In clinical trials, this was comparable to the higher titrated dose of Celexa at 40mg daily.
Another benefit noted was rapid response. Patients taking this drug had a significant improvement in symptoms within one to two weeks of beginning therapy.

Remeron
Remeron ® is the first NaSSA - a Noradrenergic and Specific Serotonergic Antidepressant. It enhances the release of the neurotransmitter noradrenaline in certain areas in the brain. It also increases the release of another neurotransmitter, serotonin. Such dual action is increasingly being recognised as beneficial for effectiveness in treating depression.
Trazodone (Sold in the US under the brand name Desyrel)>
Trazodone is an oral antidepressant drug that affects the chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) within the brain that nerves use to communicate with (stimulate) each other. The major neurotransmitters are acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. Many experts believe that an imbalance among the different neurotransmitters is the cause of depression. Although the exact mechanism of action of trazodone is unknown, it probably improves symptoms of depression by inhibiting the uptake of serotonin by nerves in the brain.>
Buspirone
Buspirone is used for the treatment of anxiety disorders and to relieve moderate symptoms of anxiety.
Buspar
BuSpar is an Antianxiety agent, used primarily for relief of mild to moderate anxiety and nervous tension. This drug is useful in treating the elderly, alcoholics, or people that have a history of addiction.
Effexor XR
Effexor is prescribed for the treatment of depression--that is, a continuing depression that interferes with daily functioning. The symptoms usually include changes in appetite, sleep habits, and mind/body coordination, decreased sex drive, increased fatigue, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, difficulty concentrating, slowed thinking, and suicidal thoughts.
Effexor XR is also prescribed to relieve abnormal anxiety (generalized anxiety disorder).
Tricyclic antidepressants
Tricyclic antidepressants are a group of medicines used to treat depression, and some other illnesses. They include amitriptyline (Lentizol, Tryptizol), amoxapine (Asendis), clomipramine (Anafranil), dothiepin (Prothiaden), doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), lofepramine (Gamanil), nortriptyline (Allegron), protryptyline (Concordin), and trimipramine (Surmontil). Most of them have been available for many years.
Tricyclics treat depression as well as another group of antidepressants, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). They also work as well as the psychological treatment cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT).
Common side effects include blurred vision, constipation, dizziness, drowsiness and dry mouth. These side-effects generally subside over days or weeks. Tricyclics are slightly less well tolerated overall than SSRIs. Patients may suffer from withdrawal side-effects if they suddenly stop taking tricyclics.
Tricyclics are highly dangerous in overdose.
Tricyclics should not be taken with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or some other medicines, or with alcohol.
Tricyclics are not addictive.

Amitripyline
Amitriptyline is prescribed for the relief of symptoms of mental depression. It is a member of the group of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants.
Some doctors also prescribe Amitriptyline to treat bulimia (an eating disorder), to control chronic pain, to prevent migraine headaches, and to treat a pathological weeping and laughing syndrome associated with multiple sclerosis.
Tofranil (Imipramine hydrochloride)
Tofranil is used to treat depression. It is a member of the family of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants.
Tofranil is also used on a short term basis, along with behavioral therapies, to treat bed-wetting in children aged 6 and older. Its effectiveness may decrease with longer use.
